Behar Library

BruchimHabaim to the Behar Library! The Behar Library provides the SHA community with a fully automated Judaic, Hebrew language and secular collection that enhances the school’s mission to create love of Jewish and secular learning and the ability to think critically and independently; Early Childhood through Eighth Grade. We are so excited by this year’s many innovative Behar Library programs designed to encourage the joy of reading in our students. These include:

• Annual Book Swap
• Two Scholastic Book Fairs
• Kindergarten/Fifth Grade Book Buddies
• Reading with Rover
• Spelling Bee
• Author-In-Residence
• Kindergarten/Fifth Grade Book Buddies
• First/Sixth Grade Book and Writing Buddies
• Book Talks
• Star Reads Program
• Book Club
• Library Volunteers
Birthday/Simcha Book Program
• TuB’Shvat Fruit and Vegetable Creations
• Pesach Book Contest
Currents Events Bulletin Board
• Research Skills
• Summer Reading Program

We are thrilled that our students now have home access to the Behar Library Online Catalog, Web Path Express (a teacher and librarian-approved internet portal), World Book Encyclopedia Online, Seattle Public Library Databases, and the Spertus College Feinberg JudaicaeLibrary. These are online reference subscriptions paid for by the Behar Library. Students receive passwords so that they may access all these resources and manage their Behar Library account from home through a Follett Library program called Destiny Quest.

In tandem with SHA’s all-school theme of Making History, this year’s Behar Library theme is Books: Making History Come Alive! We encourage students to try new fiction genres, with an emphasis on historical fiction, and to sample nonfiction books in all areas of the Dewey Decimal System.

Throughout the year we will address the question: What can history teach us? Students will chat their explorations, documenting individual reading across a wide variety of literature enhancing their appreciation of world history, social studies, current events focusing on the November presidential election, and the foundation and structure of our US government.
